Philippians 3:14 - I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul, teaching the Philippians that the Christian life is a process, affirms: "... I press on toward the goal, in order to win the prize of God's heavenly calling in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14).
For many believers, being saved from hell seems to be the only objective of the Christian life. Once a person has declared "accept Christ", has been baptized in a church and has acquired the habit of attending worship services, the matter will be resolved. That is, they will be "living" the Christian life.
Christianity that amounts to attending church was never the Apostle's teaching. For Paul, Christian life is something dynamic. It is life. Life that goes beyond temples and faces the opposition of the world. Biblical life, which begins on Sunday morning, continues throughout the week and returns the following Sunday bringing the fruits of daily testimony.
The Christian life only makes sense when it "presses on toward the goal". A goal that is Christ Jesus. A goal that is to be filled by the Spirit of Christ, in the fullness of that personality that the Lord designed for each of us. And if the goal is to be pursued, then living as a believer cannot be something that reduces to a handful of religious "habits". A believer who is truly a Christian does not stand still, merely enjoying beautiful worship services. He has a greater goal. And he presses on toward the goal every day.
