The cracked vessel and the perfect vessel
The cracked vessel and the perfect vessel. A water carrier in India had two large vessels that he placed at the ends of a pole that he carried above his shoulders. One of the vessels had a crack, while the other was perfect and delivered the water completely at the end of the long walk on foot, from the stream to his master's house.
When he arrived, the cracked vessel only contained half the water. For two complete years, this was so daily.
Right away, the perfect vessel was very proud of its results. It was perfect for the purposes for which it was created.
However, the poor cracked vessel was very ashamed of its own imperfection and felt miserable because it could only achieve half of what it was supposed to do. After two years, it spoke to the water carrier, saying to him: “I am ashamed of myself and I want to apologize to you”… “why?” The water carrier asked him.
“Because due to my cracks, you can only deliver half of my load. Because of my cracks, you only obtain half the value of what you should”.
The water carrier was very moved by the vessel and with great compassion said to it: “when we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers that grow along the path”.
So he did and, indeed, he saw very many flowers along the entire path, but still felt very sad because in the end he only carried half his load. The water carrier said to him: “Did you notice that the flowers only grow on the side of your path? I have always known about your cracks and wanted to take advantage of them, I sowed flower seeds along the entire path where you go and every day you have watered them. For two years I have been able to gather these flowers to decorate the altar of my Master. If it were not exactly as you are, He would not have had this beauty on his table”.
And you? Have you also found that you no longer have any value and are of no use?
But God chose the foolish things of this world to confound the wise; and God chose the weak things of this world to confound the strong;
And God chose the vile things of this world, and the despised things, and the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are;
That no flesh should glory before him.
